FAQ. About the grahas and upayas (Tsemra Igly)

In the course of astrological practice, both Milen and me, recommend our clients perform Grahas’ upayas, to correct their natal charts. And among other additional questions, as part of the consultation, I often hear next one: “Won’t the Graha take offense at me if I miss a day of vow?”. This prompted me to write a short note to explain basic terms and answer to frequently asked questions.

What is an upaya then? It’s a term taken from Vedic Jyotish astrology. This astrological system stands out against the background of Western astrology for its ‘magic’. Because, according to Jyotish ideas, there is a certain deity behind each planet or star, called Graha. Graha influences the planet and its position in the natal chart, which means you can solicit help with any problems you may have, caused by the position of this planet. Upaya is a process of turning to the planetary genius for help, during which the requester performs some tasks from graha, errands, quests, changes something in his behavior and thinking, in order to improve his life.

However, Jyotish and related to it, Hinduism, has one big flaw. In Vedic astrology, Grahas appear as humanoid beings in national Indian clothing, with different expressions of eyes, heads, hands, legs, eyebrows and other twists and turns typical for their iconography and mythology.

In the past, when Vedic astrology was forming, this approach of grahas’ description was useful and even necessary. Because it was very difficult to bring the knowledge about a subtle form of life, which is infinitely distant from people in its appearance and structure, to an illiterate Rajesh from the village. Probably, he can hardly count to 10, and here it is! It is easier to create a myth about a six-armed aunt-uncle on a hybrid of a lotus with a frying pan in his hand and tell him that he needs to pray it in a certain way, so that his kidneys do not get sick. It is easier to tell the ancient Indian aunt Rathi the myth about how Shukra and Guru fought among themselves than to fully describe to her the mechanics of collisions of the elements, which is based on math equations.

But now, in the age of mass reading skills and the era of artificial intelligence, this iconography is not only useless, but also quite harmful. Firstly, depicted symbols and its meanings have lost their comprehensibility due to cultural transformation. Secondly, people begin to see the grahas as their own kind. And think that the grahas may e.g. consider them as some kind of disgusting person and refuse to help them. Or resent them for something. Or condemn them. Or refuse to accept a second upaya after the failure of the first one. Neither accept the offering, because he has an allergic reaction to apple cake. But the nature of the Grahas does not include the options of such behavior.

It is not by chance I mentioned the artificial intelligence. This is a fancy human bicycle, which was invented by the inhabitants of the subtle world long before humans appeared. All kinds of operating systems, AI and their analogues were also created in the Balanced World quite a long time ago. They were actively used, including the creation of these subtle structures in which we dwell. And graha is quite a hybrid of an operating system and artificial intelligence, which supports the work of a part of the universe; operates a large database and related calculations.

The Grahas do not have body, life, feelings and thoughts we are accustomed to. They have perception and sensation, but those are radically different from ours. Our usual understanding of the concepts of names, personality, and consciousness are alien to them. However, they are depersonalized to varying degrees. There are completely impersonal ones, such as the graha Buddha (Mercury). It is a pure, nimble algorithm for analyzing a large database. And there are quite personalized ones, such as Pluto’s graha (Domaha). By the way, that’s how he named himself.

And this begs the questions. If the graha is an artificial intelligence, what are these upayas for? What are these vows, quests and other nonsense for? Why does Surya need you to run around the city looking for a place to stick a sparrow’s ass quill or start a blog?

It is not Surya who needs this, but you. Because for the graha, everything in the universe is a set of parameters in its database and a variable in calculations. But you as a subject are not only a ‘number in the database’, but also a user. You are provided with freedom of choice and the ability to influence the parameters, and also leave some of them unchanged. Therefore, until you submit a request to change something in your data, the system will not ‘lift a finger’ to change it. It has a built-in assumption that if you don’t change anything, then everything suits you. Therefore, the max you will get from the graha without sending a request is a signal about problems. Something like: look, your debit are not corresponding credit, pay attention. But you can miss these signals.

At the time of upaya, you submit a request to the «server room», like, here is a number that needs to be changed. The system analyzes the data and sends you an instruction in response, telling you what you need to do on your computer to change something in the summary data. Sometimes the problematic “datas” are just a small glitch that graha itself will fix by removing the error in its algorithms. But sometimes there are a lot of calculations behind the numerical value that depend on other numbers that you set, so you must to change a lot of variables before, to fix the one you need. In this case, you need to complete quests or vows. From the analog side, it looks like vocal lessons, dragging small objects from one place to another, something strange and ritual-like. But from the digital side, it’s introducing new variables and equations into your calculations, which will correct the existing calculations so that the sum will add up to something you want. It’s a kind of tinkering on a universal scale.

However, in order to bring about this change, the fitting must be complete and total. If you fail to fulfill the vow, you will have to start over. Missing a day in the fulfillment of a regular vow equals resetting the recalculation process and its results to zero. Ultimately, the necessary variable has not changed, and all the undone calculations will be lost in the flow of computations going on around you in the present.
