Is “Free Guy” the best film about Samsara? (Maelinhon)

Hello everybody.

An announcement for spoiler hysterics: the article reveals many plot lines and episodes of the film – a metaphysical film review of the film “Free Guy”.

Despite the fact that my site and project are dedicated to metaphysics and the history of the subtle world, I increasingly notice that the audience also really likes “easy” posts with a review of something artistic, but in the context of the same metaphysics. Simply put, what would you watch or read that would be correctly and interestingly presented from an unusual side? So to speak, entertaining content without breaking away from self-development. We have already reviewed horror films and thrillers here, both bad and good, so let’s diversify the content and consider something more exotic. Today there will be light reading about an extremely unusual film, which many perceived as a blockbuster with a strange plot, but I personally consider this “light” film to be much deeper and more complex than all the “smart” pretentious films of recent years taken together. This is the best allusion to the dense part of the Samsara system that I have seen in cinema – self-development of the 2nd level. In its own way, it is much more interesting and ideologically purer than even the cult “The Matrix”.

In general, the big problem with “serious cinema” is that it often fails to bear the weight of its own ambitions and turns into either a drag (like “Arrival”) or illogical nonsense (like “Hereditary”). Why is that? Because the plot always has some idea and message, maybe even a moral, but if you shove these themes in the viewer’s or reader’s face in plain text, it doesn’t work. A serious film cannot be serious in its presentation. Something has to remain funny, either the idea or the presentation. We need to be drawn into the characters’ conflicts, empathize with them, maybe even laugh somewhere, and through this, through feelings and emotions, we get that very semantic message. And then you can present the audience with ideas, concepts and messages.

Not everyone succeeds.

To put it simply, movies and books should focus on the plot and characters, not on presenting SeRiOuS ideas with a stone face and at a very slow pace. If there is an interesting plot, the idea will pull itself together. And here comes the paradox: seemingly easy, uncomplicated films often carry a much brighter, more interesting and valuable semantic and ethical message than those that openly declare this message. Despite the fact that they were not even positioned as films with some kind of message. Superhero movies often exploit the themes of friendship and self-sacrifice (The Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy). Thrillers and horror films – alienation from family or society (any about monsters and transformations into them), illness (The Fly), themes of violence and abuse (The Autopsy of Jane Doe, Split), the death of traditional values (The Wicker Man), etc. Dramas generally exploit these themes, for example, there is a cool film about how a person “gradually disappears” when he kills his emotions and feelings — Sandman (2011). We watch this and in the background we receive some OTHER information, while watching chases, shootouts, monsters, relationships, etc. That’s how it works. Often viewers even see ideas in films that were not put there, they just interestingly developed from the events themselves. For example, zombie films raise an interesting question: what is personality, is self-improvement necessary? How do we understand that this seemingly living, moving body is no longer our familiar person, that there is no flesh inside it?…

I recently came across a film that in the foreground is just a very good, funny and unusual sci-fi blockbuster, but in the background… In the background I paused it 8 times, went to the balcony and there nervously smoked, then screamed towards the forest, then smoked again. In short, a film with a wow effect in all senses. This is the 2021 film “Free Guy”. Of course, each person sees something different in a movie, and perhaps the creators did not mean anything like that, but based on some reservations and jokes, it still seems to me that I was not mistaken with the interpretation of the allusions.

The film is about the Samsara system. Its patterns, strengths and weaknesses, the creator of its dense version and how a conscious personality is created. In places it goes into almost undisguised Taoism and even Buddhism, although none of this is directly heard there. And it is presented extremely ironically and cheerfully, the very film with a pleasant and warm aftertaste.

The film begins with us seeing an ordinary day of an ordinary clerk at a bank. He gets up in the morning, has breakfast, feeds the fish, gets dressed, stops at a cafe on the way to work and gets himself a coffee with milk and sugar, and then goes to work. And so – every day. A kind of wheel of Samsara – day after day, his schedule is scheduled down to the minute, including even meetings with friends and leisure. But we quickly notice that the hero says the same phrases, the people around him also say the same phrases, repeat actions according to a pattern and even dress the same, which creates a feeling of unnaturalness. In their world, everything is stable, until one fine moment the hero suddenly catches a THOUGHT. For the first time, he falls out of the pattern and thinks that he would like to drink some other coffee, not the usual one. And when he orders it on the way to work, the world around him seems to stop. People turn to look at him, the barista does not understand what he is saying, and familiar phrases and actions suddenly begin to seem strange and alien to him.

And then there’s more. The hero sees the girl of his dreams and decides to turn off the usual route work-home-cafe-work and follow her. People around him try to reason with him, they don’t understand what kind of dangerous nonsense he came up with? Everything went well and steadily! But the Hero begins to become increasingly irritated by the surrounding realities. He begins to see the wheel of Samsara and begins to ask questions – why do people always say the same thing? Why do they walk the same routes? Is it possible to walk differently, dress differently, speak differently? Who came up with these phrases and the same shirts for everyone? How is it that people in dark glasses can move wherever and however they want, while the rest seem to only walk along prescribed roads?…

And the hero of the film, having caused a huge feeling of horror and indignation in those around him, steals such glasses, beginning to see the world without patterns. In the language of metaphysics, the Guy fell out of the mental field and began to think, walk and act on his own, and these are the steps to exit the wheel of Samsara. He follows the girl and she tells him that he is inside a computer game, where he is an NPC, that is, a non-player character who simply follows the patterns given to him. And around there is a whole huge world inhabited by those who invented this game and created the characters in it like this. He asks and receives questions on how to start self-development and he begins it….

Have you already started yelling? There’s more to come. It turns out that the game was created with good intentions by two geeky students, and it was originally designed to build artificial intelligence and a self-developing world. Where thinking, developing characters would live, building their own reality and personality. But the idea and source codes were brazenly stolen by a rich guy from a large corporation, and a good, decent game world was turned into some kind of ghetto with violence, cruelty and a bunch of unthinking, automatic NPCs. Where thinking people just come to let off steam and do something reprehensible that they can’t do in real life. That is, there are millions of such NPCs, you can easily kill them and do whatever you want with them, they are powerless against players and after death they are simply restored in the game from the original data, not remembering themselves and their next death – it doesn’t remind you of anything – it’s pure Samsara, the wheel of our life.

Well, at this point you should definitely start yelling like a pterodactyl during mating season!

So what are we seeing? The system, conventionally called Samsara, is a huge, gigantic system of energy highways that build all the conditions of life for all creatures in all worlds. That is, it provides their bodies, psyche, positions in space and time (and its course), opportunities, interactions and millions of other points. The system is neither bad nor good, it simply provides life and its balance, giving everyone the opportunity to develop and receive a return from the world for their actions (both good and bad). The entire system was initially subtle. Then a certain Antwan appeared… I mean, Igwe/Yahweh, and sort of fenced off part of this system from the general one.

He created a system inside a system.

This is Samsara of the dense world. Inhabited by dense people and other fauna, the main feature of which is that they are all non-player characters. That is, each unconscious person in the system is just a set of files, where it is written what he should say, what he should think and do, how to live, where to go and what problems he should have. A person is born, rides along the prescribed rails for some years, dies, is born again, and so on until he suddenly wants coffee without milk. And then the system throws all its forces into distracting the NPC from “bad” thoughts and returning it to the rails and algorithms at any cost. Personal self-development of a unit is a red rag to a bull for it.

And yes, the system was created by geeks and techies, so Samsara paradoxically operates with the same units – algorithms, patterns, graphs, files and databases. All these units, in some form, were invented millions of years before the advent of not only computers, but also people themselves.

So these databases and patterns of dense Samsara are called the Mental Field – this is a conglomerate of data and information that seems to hang in space and is sort of “known to everyone”. You have to live like this, you have to do this, I am such and such, I want this, I speak such and such a language, I live in such and such a house… All this informational gibberish flies through everyone’s brains in tons every day, without causing any reflection. And so NPC people appear. They seem to be alive, they say something, they go somewhere, but from the point of view of “characters in glasses” – they just move according to the algorithm prescribed by the system. And not according to their own. And what’s interesting is that in the film the hero offers his friend glasses, but he refuses out of fear, because his patterns do not specify that he could wear them.

Want to see the pattern and how unconscious people look to entities? Catch some fanatic and ask him a question about the subject of his fanaticism (religious, child-centered and I’m-a-mother, patriots, in short, any). He will confidently give you some text. Ask him an uncomfortable question on the topic. He will frown and … repeat his text, possibly in different words and with the addition of other patterns. Depending on the level of stupidity of your vis-à-vis, he will give this cart over and over again and get angry why you do not understand and do not accept it. He does not think about the meaning of what was said, he does not understand that he is repeating the same thing, he just says what is “on topic” in the database of mental space. And they repeat it as if we do not know it. We know what is floating in the mental (and does not sink), it does not get better from repetition. Catch a couple more units, repeat the operation. They will give you the same text (!), with the same message, sometimes with the same (!!) words. It sounds scary, actually, when different people say the same thing, but if you want to be a guy with glasses, then it is useful for you to look at the patterns of the mental field in reality – everyone lives in a circle and moves in a circle. Then you will most likely ask yourself the question, how to get out of the wheel of Samsara?

In the movie “Free Guy” there is a scene where the Guy makes fun of a character who constantly loses his cat and every time he says the same phrase about it, without even trying to understand it or somehow influence the situation. And in the finale, the main virtual villain did not have time to write the entire text and he talks nonsense, but with a very menacing intonation. Oh, hello, Taoism. It seems we just reinvented you. Because this is approximately how an enlightened person, by the standards of metaphysics, sees ordinary people and the guiding spokes sticking out of their asses. They repeat phrases and messages from the mental field in exactly the same way, then they are repeated on TV and in a circle.

Just as these people do not have a mind, they do not have a personality. Yes, they have some kind of appearance, a name in their passport, some tastes, but these parameters are also simply prescribed by the system. They do not create their own and do not even know about such an option. An unconscious person has a name, but what kind of name is it? A set of letters invented by his NPC parents? Not a good name for a personality. He did not choose this name, it does not relate to him or his personality. The name is from the database, tastes and views are from the database, everything is from the mental field, and almost nothing is from himself. Many will object, well, I am alive, I love pizza! Yes, but the guy “loved” coffee with milk…

Well, these are the questions and nuances that consciousness in the metaphysical plane rests on! And not on which patterns from the proposed ones to choose for yourself, on which up to 99% of those who decided to try to go beyond the framework are cut down. They want some self-development, slightly raise their heads and immediately fall into another pattern and begin to argue among themselves about which pattern is better. But you need to live without them and beyond them. Only in this way is personality, vision, a clear ego, layers and anything else established.

There is a moment in the film where the heroine, all bright, otherworldly, with her own features and peculiarities, name, speaking outside the box, asks the hero a question: who are you? She expects him to give his real name, some details, where he is from, who… But he gets confused and does not even understand the question itself. In what sense, who am I? I am me. I… uh… I am a guy in a blue shirt, I… Damn, but really, who am I?! And this dilemma is where the conflict of the film begins, because the hero understands that he does not have an answer to this question. He does not have one. And he begins to literally create himself, his goals and his story. And it turns out that he is the only one who, for some reason, suddenly “woke up” and began to think. And essentially asked himself the question of how to get out of Samsara? These reasons are voiced in the film, but I will not tell all the plot lines. Sapienti sat…

I myself don’t play computer games; I’m not interested in such leisure activities at all. That’s why I usually don’t use metaphors from this sphere of life. But I really liked the way the creators of this masterpiece use them, presenting information known to me through a frame unknown to me. The film has some problems with its presentation, it is deliberately “happy ending” and positive, even cloying, but in terms of plot and meaning it is incredibly bright and good. In a word, I recommend it. Such complex concepts can be interpreted in different ways and from different angles, but in any case, such a movie is like a breath of fresh air and ideas in the middle of an endless field of hackneyed cliches. Yes, movies are also filmed with NPCs and also according to patterns.
